Application Information
Applications for a research starter grant award are to be submitted online by September 1, 2008. Please note that no applications will be accepted after the deadline date.
Awards to be made for the year beginning January 1, 2009 will be acknowledged no later than December 15, 2008.
1. Registration Information. Submit your information online by following the steps in the registration process.
2. Letters of support from the department head and sponsor of the candidate (if different).
3. An extended letter that includes the following information
(a) Candidate Information
Name, Personal Data, Citizenship/Permanent Residency, Experience in research (including c.v.), and Bibliography.
(b) Name of postdoctoral advisor, where appropriate.
(c) Research plan (Font size 12 or larger, single spaced, one-half inch margins)
Applicants are requested to use a format similar to that specified for the submission of grants to the National Institutes of Health. This narrative should be limited to 15 pages and include objectives/specific aims; background/significance/rationale; preliminary studies; research design/methodology; and bibliography. Acronyms should be put in a footnote on the first page or they should be spelled in full the first time it is used.
Other principals involved in the project as collaborators and the amount of time devoted to the project by the applicant and other principals should be identified. List by titles the funded research projects of each principal, the fraction of time committed, and the amount and source of funds for these projects; Identify the amount of intramural support presently available to the candidate for the proposed project and other research efforts by budget categories and amounts. If the school makes available the services of a technician to the candidate, note this. Identify that part of the proposal that is to be directly initiated or expedited by the Foundation's funds.
4. For those research projects involving human subjects, a properly executed protection of human subject certification must be included. If it is not possible to include this with the application and still meet the application deadline, the latest this certification may reach the Foundation for the application to be considered is October 1, 2008.
